Holiday Travel? How to Roof-Proof Your Home Before You Go

The holidays are prime time for travel, and they also land right in the middle of San Diego's rainy stretch. That's an unlucky combination if your roof has been quietly nursing a weak spot. A leak that starts while you're away has no one to catch it, which means days or weeks of water seeping in before you walk back through the door — much like the hidden cost a leaky roof brings to winter entertaining, the damage builds long before anyone notices. A little roof-proofing before you leave can spare you a very unwelcome homecoming.

Clear the Gutters First

Before any trip during the wet season, make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear. Clogged gutters back water up under the roof edge and let it overflow against your siding and foundation. Five minutes of clearing leaves now means rainwater drains the way it should while you're gone, instead of pooling where it can do damage. Since our gutters collect dust and debris all through the dry months, they're often more clogged than they look heading into winter, even if it hasn't rained in weeks.

Look for the Obvious Weak Spots

You don't need to climb up to do a useful check. From the ground or a ladder, scan for shingles that are missing, lifted, or cracked, and for sealant that's peeling around vents and chimneys — the same kind of quick steps that prepare your roof for the holidays whether you're staying home or heading out. Inside, glance at your ceilings for any fresh stains. If something already looks off, it's far better to address it before you leave than to come home to a soaked ceiling.

Valleys and flashing are the usual suspects, so give those transitions a closer look if you can see them safely. Don't forget the inside of the house, either: a quick scan of upstairs ceilings and closet corners can reveal an early stain that's easy to miss in day-to-day life but signals a leak that will only worsen while you're away.

Set Up a Safety Net

Even with a solid roof, peace of mind helps when you'll be away for a stretch:

A trusted set of eyes back home turns a potential disaster into a quick phone call. The difference between a minor repair and a major one is often just how long water was allowed to run unchecked, and an empty house over a rainy week is exactly when that clock runs longest.

It's a good idea to leave your roofer's number, and not just your house-sitter's, somewhere easy to find. If a storm does cause trouble while you're gone, your helper can call someone who can tarp or stabilize the roof right away instead of waiting for you to fly home.

Travel Without Worrying About the Roof

The whole point of a holiday trip is to relax, not to wonder whether your ceiling is dripping back home. A quick pre-trip check, or a professional once-over, lets you leave with confidence.
