Licensing and insurance. Make sure the estimate includes any relevant licenses and insurance to avoid homeowner liability later. This matters especially for emergency repairs, which can be more dangerous due to slippery surfaces, low light, and bad weather.

Response time. An emergency repair needs to be applied quickly to minimize water damage. During a storm, many companies are overwhelmed by calls — make sure you confirm when they can actually get someone out to your home.

Our emergency roof repairs are not warrantied because they are designed to be a temporary fix rather than a permanent solution. A roof that needs a leak patched will still need to be properly repaired once the rain has stopped.

In San Diego, you'll usually discover you need an emergency repair when it's actively raining and water begins to come through your roof. You should also get an emergency repair if there is rain in the forecast and you know there is roof damage. For other issues — such as broken tiles, slipped shingles, or wood damage — you can schedule a regular repair consultation as long as there's no rain in the forecast.

Our emergency repairs will last the duration of the rainstorm, but they degrade quickly afterward. We never recommend relying on an emergency repair for more than a few weeks at most. They're designed to minimize further damage while giving you time to schedule a regular roof repair.

The most common causes of roof leaks are:

• Aging roof materials — as shingles, tiles, underlayment, and other parts of your roof age, they can lose their waterproof properties.
• Improper installation — a properly installed and maintained roof should be waterproof for around 20 years. If your roof is younger than that and leaking, there's a good chance it wasn't installed correctly.
• Lack of maintenance — preventative maintenance like replacing damaged shingles and inspecting for damage can prevent leaks, especially as a roof ages.

We are usually able to get someone out to your home the same day, though our precise response time depends on how busy we are when your roof begins to leak. Once our team is on site, they can usually have the leak under control within an hour.

Yes. Roof leaks don't resolve on their own — the issue will always get worse over time. A roof can appear to stop leaking if the rain stops or if the water finds another route into your home (such as into your walls rather than through your ceiling). Any time you suspect your roof is leaking, get it repaired as soon as possible to mitigate structural damage.
