TIPS FOR ROOFERS
CALL PEOPLE BACK AND SHOW UP ON TIME
My dad told me these first two when I was 12 years old. He said, you can really make it in this industry if you call people back and show up when you say you're going to show up. I hear these all the time from clients. “They never called me back”. That’s such an easy way to lose business, but many businesses overlook it. The next is: show up on time. Showing up on time, especially for a first look is critical to earning business and building trust.
AVOID LOW BIDDING AND PROVIDE ACCURATE ESTIMATES
I hate seeing low bidding in our industry. Low bidding involves providing a “low estimate” and then discovering additional charges along the way. It’s extremely frustrating to clients and gives the industry as a whole a bad reputation. Provide accurate estimates and stick to them.
FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER'S AND THE NRCA'S RULES FOR INSTALLING THAT PARTICULAR ROOF SYSTEM
I see this when I drive by projects. It can save time and money to not follow rules, but just do it right. It can be a safety issue and we all should be on the same playing field.
PERMITS
As a roofer you should be responsible for pulling permits. You're the responsible party. You have to pull those permits. Charge the client for it, it's a valid thing to charge them for, but you have to include the permits.
BONUS: PAY YOUR INSURANCE
Pay your insurance policy and cover all your team. It covers you, it covers them, it covers the client, it covers their house. We all know all the stories of this guy fell or this guy got burnt or hurt or that kind of thing and it just kind of goes away. Well, long term that's not good for the guys, for the crew, of course for the clients, for your business. Pay the insurance.
